BDSM Full Glossary

Here is a full glossary with terms used in the BDSM community. BDSM stands for Bondage and Discipline, Dominatinance and Submission, and Sadomasochism. It is a consenting sexual experience that involves different practices like bondage, discipline, and roleplaying among other activities. Some people in the BDSM community begin dominant terms with an upper case and submissive terms with a lower case, even when normally incorrect, mainly in acronyms and abbreviations, such as D/s for Dom/sub. Some extend this further for example: Master Jim and i... Or as this slave, bring restricted from referring to themselves in the first person. Others are highly dismissive of this "splashy speak". 

24' 7's The term used for those who not only practice BDSM in the bedroom but live it 24 hours a day, seven days a week 

Abduction Play A scenario where a submissive is forcibly restrained and often taken to another location for further play

Abrasion Play Using something rough like sandpaper or a brush, to provide stimulation 

Adult Baby/Diaper Lover Adult babies receive gratification from role playing an infant. A form of age play. This can involve submission on the adult baby's part. Diaper lovers receive gratification from the wearing and using of diapers

Aftercare This is the practice of self care after what is called a drop, when, after an intense scene or BDSM play, the participants have an emotional drain and they practice self care like cuddling, checking in, hugging to help them return to a normal state of mind

Age Play When one person takes on the younger role and the other person takes on the older role such as father~daughter scenario 

Algolagnia Obtaining sexual pleasure from pain often involving an erogenous zone 

Anal Hook A hook placed in the anus, used for control

Anal Torture Inflicting pain in the anus

Anal Training Inserting progressively larger objects, usually buttplugs, in order to stretch the anal sphincter in preparation for activities such as anal fisting

Anime A style of animated cartoon developed in Japan in which some people have a fetish with dressing up or having sex with a partner who is dressed as an Anime character 

Androgymy Showing characteristics of both sexes

Animal Play A kink where one partner, usually the submissive, pretends to be an animal, often at the amusement, training, grooming, and affection of the Dominant

Auction The event of, usually roleplaying, where a Dom sales his slave or sub

Bagging Suffocation using a bag over one's head as a turn on

Ball Busting The act of inflicting pain to a man's genitals either by kicking, slapping, punching, flogging, etc. for his pleasure

Balls Out Risky Kink (BORK) Permissive and exceptionally risky sexual behaviors. Differs from typical edge play in that BORK Play can have catastrophic results even with proper equipment maintenance and techniques, there is still a major risk present

Bastinado Impact play involving the soles of the feet

Beastiality Having sex with animals 

BDSM Lifestyle The people who live the lifestyle outside of the bedroom 

Bit A style of mouth gag that is cylindrical

Blackbooting Using a a shoe heel as an anal dildo

Blackmail Commonly referred to as consensual blackmail. Where a submissive provides material that would be undersiable or have personal or career consequences for them if made public in order to force them to stay in a relationship

Bladder/Bowel Control Requiring the submissive to ask for permission to toilet, even training the submissive to be able to eliminate in the Dominants presence or while being fondled, which is used to foster the submissives trust and acceptance of the Dominant in the most intimate aspects of the subs life

Blood Play The act of drawing blood during play

Body Worship Usually done by a Submissive, a practice where one worships a body part of the Dominant such as Cock Worship 

Bondage To physically restrain a person using handcuffs, ropes, chains, or any other material to restrain their physical movements 

Boot Blacking Boot blacking is the art of treating and maintaining leather. Boot blacking is a service both seen in public and in private. It is a way to ritually care for the Dominant's leather goods, especially boots. Others use it as a form of worship, called boot worship

Boot Worship The extreme adulation of boots, usually carried out while the footwear is being worn by the Dominant partner

Bottom The person who takes on the position of being obedient or submissive in a BDSM scenario who may endure pain being inflicted upon themselves or being bound like handcuffed or tied up

Brat A submissive who is deliberately uncoorperative, topping from the bottom, pretending to be young, for the purpose of eliciting attention and/or punishment from the Dom/Domme

Breast Bondage The practice of the tying of rope around a woman's breasts in a visually intricate and decorative pattern

Breast Torture Torture of the breast 

Breath Play Or erotic asphyxiation, is a popular form of BDSM to restrict one's air intake for sexual pleasure 

Breeding The act of having unprotected sex to ejaculation that often includes a breeding fantasy where the roleplay involves being impregnated

Brown Shower Play that involves defecation, shit, crap, poop

BTS Behind The Scenes which typically is an image captured or the activities going on in real life that isn't captured in a staged photo or video shoot

Bukkake A Japanese term for a woman being cummed on by a group of men

Bull In a cuckolding scene, the other man who is invited to have sex with the wife

Bull Whip A type of single tail consisting of a woven or braided leather whip, usually longer than 4' with a short rigid handle

Bunny A term of endearment for a sub/bottom. Also used in pet play

Butch A woman, usually gay, who embraces and empowers the masculine energy within themselves 

Butt Plug Like a dildo for the anus with a wider bottom base to prevent it from entirely entering the rectum 

Caging A BDSM practice of a Dominant putting a Submissive into a cage for a scene or a period of time

Camming Where people on the internet go live to have sex on their web cams

Cane A thin rod used for striking commonly made of hardwood, bamboo, or acrylic

Cat O'Nine Tails Whip with nine tails or lashes

CBT Cock Ball Torture The fetish of inflicting pain and/or pressure upon a males genitals 

Chasity A form of erotic sexual denial or orgasm denial where a person is prevented access to or prevented from stimulation to their genitals by the use of a chastity belt

Chemical Play Using chemicals to produce sensation such as tiger balm, menthol, rubbing alcohol, toothpaste, wintergreen oil, Tabasco sauce, ginger, peppermint

Clover Clamp A specific type of nipple clamp with a level mechanism to which a chain is affixed in a way that pulling increases pressure on the clam

Cock Milking The practice of forcing a male to discharge semen through the penis through prostate massage without experiencing a pleasurable orgasm. This can be done in humiliation play to frustrate, arouse, or humilate a submissive

Collaring The ceremonial giving of a collar from a Dominant to a Submissive is very symbolic. It means being committed and it symbolizes a relationship between the Dom and Sub

Compersion The opposite of jealousy. When someone gets sexual pleasure from watching their lover receive sexual pleasure from someone else 

Consent Agreeing to the acts performed in a BDSM scene or play. Practitioners believe that consent is what separates BDSM from assault

Consent/Non~Consent A sex act that implies rape. One partner is consenting to act out a scene of non~consent aka rape

Contract An arrangement that outlines the rules and structures of a BDSM relationship. It may be written or oral

Contrapolar Stimulation "Hurts so Good" A type of physical stimulation that incorporates feeling of both pleasure and pain

Corporal Punishment Punishment involving pain, often through impact, as a means to discipline

Creampie Visuals of cum dripping out of a vagina or asshole

Crop A thin flexible tool used for striking, sometimes made from bamboo, wood, or acrylic

Cruise Party A party set up with the purpose of bringing people together who may be interested in hooking up with someone for play

Cuckold The fetish practice of a partner being humilated as they're being forced to watch their partner engage in sex with someone else 

Cuck Queen The female role who has sex with other men while her partner watches for the means of control and humiliation 

Cupping A form of temperature play where the air in a cup is heated and then placed on the skin, when the air cools off, a vacuum seal is created that causes the cup to become stuck to the skin

D/s (Dominance and Submission) A BDSM relationship where one assumes the position of power or dominance and one assumes the role of obedience 

DDLG Daddy Dom/Little Girl A form of age play where the Daddy Dom takes on a nurturing role of like a parent to a submissive who role plays a little girl

Daddy Dom A Dom who assumes the role of being more sweet and nurturing and may engage in age play with the submissive 

Denial (Sexual) The practice of refraining from sexual encounters in order to increase erotic arousal and/or tension

Discipline In a BDSM relationship, the act of a dominant person who trains the submissive partners behavior with punishment and rewards

Dollification Turning into a living doll, often as a desire to be owned, as in owner/doll which is similar to master/slave or dom/sub. This includes physical traits of stiletto heels, rubber suites, dresses, make~up, etc and mental traits such as objectification and subservience 

Domestic Often applied to a submissive who serves in the home cleaning, cooking, and running the household, this may or may not involve sexual activity

Dom A person who takes on the dominant role usually a male but can be used for any gender 

Domina A dominant who is female and embraces a feminine gender role

Dominant/Dom A person who takes on the role of the authority or the Dominant role in BDSM scenes or play

Dominatrix A female who assumes a dominant role in BDSM play who uses humiliation, pain and torture but this is not in every case. Typically a paid professional 

Domme A female dominant

Drop The physical and/or emotional exhaustion that takes place after a scene. Both tops and bottoms may experience a drop. Crying, sadness, and physical shaking are all signs of a drop

Dungeon A location where BDSM scenes take place, usually in a bedroom or in someone's home or at a club

Dungeon Monitor A person or a group of people that supervise BDSM play at play parties to ensure everyone is safe and consenual

Edging Bringing someone close to the edge of having an orgasm and then denying it from happening 

Edgeplay The practice of pushing the boundaries of what is considered safe or consensual such as blood play or fire play

Electro Kink play that involves electrically charged objects such as violet wands, stun guns, cattle prods

Enema Play Someone who experiences sexual arousal from enemas finding them gratifying or senual

Erotic Humiliation Humiliating someone during a sexual act

Erotic Spanking The act of spanking someone for the sexual arousal or gratification 

Exhibitionism Exposing oneself or their genitals or engaging in sex acts while others watch

Face Sitting When the dominant sits on the submissives face as part of D/s play

Failsafe A just in case arrangement that allows the bottom to escape from bondage in case of an emergency 

Fear Play The practice of using fear to create sexual pleasure. Unlike the masochistic tendencies, fear play does not offer the person pleasure or arousal through a rush of endorphins, but rather a terrified mental state which triggers a release of adrenaline

Felching The act of someone sucking the cum out of another person's vagina or anus. Can be a part of cuckold scenes where the cuck is forced to felch or to lick or suck the cum out of his wife's vagina or anus

Femme A female bodied gay woman who carries very feminine energy and can be mistaken for a straight woman as she wears feminine clothing and make~up

Feminization Also known as sissification, a BDSM practice which involves the reversal of gender roles and making a submissive male take on feminine traits, which includes making the male to cross dress. This could include "sissy training" where the submissive male is trained to become feminine

Figging The practice of inserting a piece of skinned ginger root into the anus in order to generate a burning sensation. This was used as a form of punishment but it has been made a practice in BDSM

Financial Domination This involves a Domme having control over a sub's finances and spending

Fire and Ice Play alternating between hot wax and ice or ice water

Fire Play Play involving the use of flammable liquids to create quick, fleeting contacts of flame on the skin

Fisting Inserting a hand or fist into the vagina or anus 

Flogger A type of whip that has strips of leather, suede, or other materials, used for mild punishment. Usually used on the buttocks or the breast or the crotch 

Foot Fetish A fetish where a person is sexually aroused by feet or shoes

Forced Orgasm An orgasm that is induced on a person against their will

Furry One who assumes an animal character in play, sometimes with a costume 

Gag Any device or object placed in the mouth to prevent a person from speaking or making loud noises and sometimes to hold the mouth open

Gates of Hell Male Chasity device usually made with leather or rubber and used to enclose or restrict the penis and testicles

Gender Play A type of BDSM play when an individual in a scene takes on the role of the opposite gender

Genitorture Torture of the genitals 

Gimp A body suit often with a face covering, sometimes with genital openings, made of plastic, PVC, or leather often used for humiliation

Glory Hole A hole cut out into a wall or partitioner in which the penis is inserted in order to receive oral sex or masturbation from an anonymous person on the other side

Gokkun The act of drinking a cup full of cum often from several men. One porn shows a person drinking a cup of semen from 200 men

Golden Shower When one pisses on another with a sexual element

Good Pain Good pain and bad pain are terms used lightheartly by BDSM practitioners, signifying that there is a purpose to the consensual pain, while some pain is connected to and some is not. Good pain is consented to, desired, or permitted by the submissive and is seen by them as enjoyment 

Grandmother Rule Generally applied to vanilla spaces such as public areas in a hotel where a BDSM event is being held, or heading to a party at someone's house, your appearance and conduct themselves should be that if you happened to bump into your grandma, she wouldn't be shocked

Greek Anal sex

Gorean A subculture of the BDSM community that is based on the philosophy of John Norman's sword and planet novel series Chronicles of Counter Earth where players act out a barbaric world of sexual slavery

Gunplay Using actual or simulate firearms in a scene

Hair Bondage Technique where the hair is secured in a way as to limit mobility of the head and also done for the sensation it gives

Handkerchief Code Also known as the hanky code, the bandana code, and flagging is a color coded cloth handkerchief or bandanas for signaling someone's interest in sex activities and fetishes. The color of the handkerchief identifies the wearers preferred role in the activity

Hard Limits An activity that a person absolutely will not do and there is no negotiation about it. It is a Hard Limit

Head Games BDSM scenes where a Dom manipulates the psychological or mental state of the sub, instead of the physical manipulation like through impact play or bondage. Also referred to as mind games 

Healslut In BDSM culture and in video gaming, a healslut is a player who selects a healer~class character to provide healing to another player as part of a dominant~submissive role play dynamic

Hedonistic Pursuit of the pleasures

Hetroflexiible A hetrosexual person who can occasionally find someone of the same sex sexually appealing

Hogtie Tying up a submissives wrists and ankles, fastening them together behind their back using physical restraints such as rope or cuffs

Homoflexible A homosexual person who can occasionally find someone of the opposite sex sexually appealing

Horse A piece of bondage furniture consisting of a plank supported by two legs on each end where a person may be bent or tied over and flogged or spanked

Houseboy A submissive who keeps the house clean and may be just a sexual play thing whenever the dominant wanted

Human Furniture Is furniture in which a person's body is used as a tray, foot stool, chair, table, cabinet or other furniture item

Humilation Play The practice that involves humiliating a partner with verbal or physical acts, like calling someone a whore or forced bi sexual play

Hypno Play Kink play where a Dom hypnotizes a sub in order to make them believe they are bonded

Impact Play BDSM practice of using physical contact on another such as spanking, slapping, or striking 

Inspection A form of scenario play usually in a master/slave like relationship where a submissive has to strip naked at the command of a dominant and adopt a pose to have their body, posture, grooming and appearance inspected. They also may have other areas of execution examined at this time. After inspection a sub may be rewarded for passing or punished for failing

Interrogation Scene A form of BDSM roleplay where the participants act out the parts of torturer and victim. The torturer uses threats, humiliation and physical pain to extract whatever information they believe the victim possess just as in real life torture chambers throughout the world

Japanese Bondage A more common term is Shibari, where one partner ties the other in beautiful and intricate patterns of rope as a method of restraint but also can be an art form

Kajira In John Norman's Gor novels, a Kajira is a slave girl

Klismaphilia Where both men and women who may experience sexual arousal from enemas finding them gratifying or senual. Enemas are also used in sadomasochistics activities for erotic humiliation or for physical discomfort 

Knife Play A form of concensual edgeplay involving knives, daggers, and swords as a source of physical and mental stimulation 

Leather Community A subculture of the BDSM community that wears leather

Limits Refer to issues that participants in a scene feel strongly about, referring to prohibited activities

Masochism The sexual pleasure one gets from pain being inflicted upon them

Master A term used to address the dominant male in power play BDSM scene 

Medical Fetish Refers to several fetishes in which people derive sexual pleasure from medical scenarios where they roleplay doctors, nurses, surgeons, and patients

Mentor A trusted guide or coach 

Mistress A term used to address the dominant female

MD/LB Mommy Dom/Little Boy The dominant female plays as a nurturing mother role to a submissive 

Munch A social informal gathering of BDSM practitioners for the purpose of a discussion ususlly done in a low pressure public place

Mummified A practice where one restrains another by wrapping their whole body, tightly, with plastic wrap

Muscle Worship Also called sthenolignia is a form of body worship in which one person worships the muscles of another by touching, licking, kissing etc to worship the muscles

Needle Play This involves using needles on a partner, involving sticking a needle temporarily through a body part or erogenous zone

Negotiation Prior to the commencement of a scene where people talk about what they will do and won't do, their preferences, etc 

Nose Torture A classic Japanese form of BDSM that usually involves a hook applied to the nose called a nose hook that pulls the nose backwards

Nyotaimori A human Sushi table

Objectification The subject is dehumanized, treated as an animal, slave, furniture, toy, etc

Objectum Sexuality Objectum sexual are people who have romantic feelings for inanimate objects 

Omnisexual Being strongly attracted to or aroused by both sexes

Orgasm Denial The dominant partner will bring the submissive close to orgasm and then denying it 

Owned When a submissive or a slave partner is owned by their master or dominant 

Paddle A small plank, used for spanking

Painslut A submissive who craves pian 

Pansexual Someone who is attracted to all genders

Play Piercing A practice where one pierces the skin with needles for sexual pleasure which causes an endorphin high, which can last for hours and can induce orgasm in many of the people that experience this

Plushie One who plays with stuffed/plush animals, may or may not be a sexual act

Polyamory This is considered responsible non~monogamy where there is a loving, stable, and open long term emotional and sexual relationships among more than two people. Often committed and on going relationships sometimes all partners know about each other and agree to new participants

Polysexual Having sex with multiple partners without commitment, often done in group parties or orgies

Pony Play Where the submissive takes on the role of a horse, some are into dressing like a horse, being paraded around for show, grooming, etc

Post Orgasm Torture Uncomfortable or painful stimulation of the genitals immediately after orgasm when these are in a more sensitive state

Power Exchange The power exchange occurs when one person receives the power that is given up by another person

Power Exchange dynamic The power exchange occurs during a scene or it can be continuous

Professional Submissive A person who performs the submissive role in exchange for money. Most Submissives do not have sex with their clients 

Predicament Bondage A type of bondage where the intent is to place the bound person in an awkward, difficult, inconvenient, or uncomfortable situation

Pro Domme/Pro Dom A professional top and dominant who dominates and provides service in exchange for pay, may or not be sexual 

Psychological Play The practice of getting into someone's mind like their fears or insecurities

Public Play BDSM social events where there is suggested protocol such as when you go to the hosts house or whatever dwelling the event is hosted at with high discretion. There usually is directions on where to park so as not to block neighbors in or to draw attention to the dwelling because it is a 'public dungeon' for the BDSM community but because they do not want their activities to be known to neighbors, they want to stay 'invisible'. Do not bring any attention to yourself and act in appropriate manner on the way to the dwelling. Wear your street clothes, usually black, unless otherwise directed by the host, discreetly bring your dungeon clothing and toys and such in everyday bags or mundane tubes. Be discreet. 

Puppy A sub who acts like a puppy for the amusement of their Dom/Domme

Punishment Refers to enforcing rules and regulations in a BDSM relationship which can be physical or mental 

Pussy Torture Torture of the vulva or vagina for sexual pleasure 

Queening When a woman the queen you must worship, sits on your face, another term for face sitting often used in D/s play

Rack (Risk~Aware Consensual Kink) A standard in the BDSM community that emphasizes informed consent and are aware and accept the risk of BDSM play

Rape Sexual activity that often ends in sexual intercourse without the consent of all participants chiefly by force or deception often acted out in a rape fantasy roleplay

Rhaphanidosis Insertion of a piece of radish into the anus

Rigger The one who ties up a rope bunny

Rimming Licking and/or inserting the tongue into the anus

Ring Gag A type of gag consisting of a metal ring which is then placed into the mouth as a way to hold it open 

Ring of O A ring being worn by those who participate in BDSM, mainly in Continental Europe, especially in the German speaking countries, since the 1990's. It's name derives from the name of the central female character in the classic BDSM novel Story of O, written by Anne Disclose, who was a sex slave and wore an analogous ring

Role Play To act out as someone else in a scene such as teacher and student, jailer and prisoner 

Roman Shower Vomiting on another person

Rope Bunny A submissive who enjoys being tied up

Sadism The activity of getting sexual excitement from inflicting pain unto another person

Sadist A person who enjoys inflicting pain unto another, usually sexual

Safe, Sane, and Consensual A standard throughout the BDSM community which means that all activities are being carried out in a safe manner that is not harmful to anyone mentally or physically and all involved have agreed to participate 

Safe Word An agreed upon word that a sub, slave, bottom can use to stop the scene, activity, session immediately

S.A.M. In gay male subculture this stands for Stand and Model posing in leather. In BDSM it stands for Smart Ass Masochist or brat who is deliberately disobedient to provoke punishment 

Safe Call A prearranged call to let a friend know you are ok especially in first meeting situations

Sapiosexulity The attraction or arousal by intelligence

Scat Play involving defecation, shit, poop, crap

Scene A scene is a BDSM scenario where willing participants have agreed to carry out certain activities they beforehand have discussed and consented to

Scrotal Inflation or Scrotal Infusion Is a sexual practice in which fluid is injected into the scrotum in order to make it ballon in size. It carries a number of risks of serious complications, including Scrotal cellulitis, subcutaneous emphysema, and possibly fatal complications such as Fournier's gangrene or air embolism 

Sensation Play The practice of using sensory stimulation such as ice, candle wax, or feathers to name a few, using the five senses which are touch, feel, sound, sight, and taste

Sensory Deprivation or Perceptual Isolation The deliberate reduction or removal of stimuli from one or more of the senses

Sensual Dominantion A form of BDSM that focuses on pleasure instead of pain 

Service Oriented Submissive A submissive or obedient role a person takes on who takes pleasure in serving and pleasing their Master 

Session A meeting, date, play, scene that is less structured 

Sex Magick A sex act done as part of a ritual with a non~sexual purpose

Shibari A western name for Kinbaku which is a type of bondage originating in Japan and characterized by extremely elaborate and intricate patterns of rope often used to restrain the subject and to stimulate by compressing the breasts or genitals, the aesthetics are considered to be very important 

Singletail A whip that has a single lash and requires skill and training to use it properly

Sissification Training of a male sub on how to take on female traits. Involves dressing the male in female clothing, possibly putting on make~up, etc

Sissy A male sub who uses feminization and dressing as a girl to reach a different emotional or mental state

Slave A submissive person in a BDSM relationship 

Small Penis Humiliation The activity of humiliating a male's penis with verbal assaults and degrading remarks. The men who participate in this activity do not always have a small penis

Snakewhip A small singletail whip that does not have the rigid handle of a bull whip. Also has a cracker attached to a fall

Snowballing The act of kissing another with a mouth full of cum and transferring it to them

Soft Limits A limit that is more flexible than a Hard Limit. An activity that someone may not want to do but may perform with negotiation 

Sounding The kink of inserting a stainless steel medical rod into a males urethra which sounds very painful but a lot of folks are into it. For men, sounding can access their prostate in ways that no other type of play can

Spotter A person who monitors the safety of the submissive in a scene, most commonly used for complex bondage and suspension scenes

Squick The uncomfortable feeling someone may get when they hear or see certain kinky activities. It can also refer to someone who has no interest in the activity ~it 'squicks them out'~ but who has no prejudice against the play or people who participate. It is believed that the word is a combination of 'squirm' and 'icky' and is used to imply an uncomfortable feeling mixed with disgust. The term is used instead of disgust because that word implies moral repugnance to the act

Sub Drop The term used after a very high, fast paced BDSM scene, where the submissive partner experiences a major mood shift such as depression or shame after an intense session

Submissive/Sub A person who takes on the role of being obedient to the Dominant person in BDSM scenes or play

Swinging Non monogamous recreational sex with the consent, knowledge and often reciprocal participation of one's partner. Often does not include a romantic relationship with the swinging partner and can be just one night

Switch The practice of switching between a Dominant role and a Submissive Role

Tease and Denial Keeping another person aroused to keep them in a continual state of anticipatory tension or heightened sensitivity 

TENS Unit An electric muscle simulator that gives mild electrical signals via pads attached to the skin

Temperature Play Sensual play where objects and substances are used to stimulate the body's neureceotors for heat and cold for sensual effects 

Tit Torture The act of causing deliberate pain to the breasts or nipples
